Can my friend's mother really have grounds to take her to court for this?

She could try, but she would fail miserably. Hands down. Unless there is something she knows about your friend and her husband that could give her a touch down in court. Hopefully, if they have clean records and nothing against them, then she would have nothing to go on in court.
